Wednesday 11 March 2020
5.30–6.30pm

RMIT University, Building 50 (11–15 Orr Street, Carlton)

Join us for the first open talk in Semester 1 featuring: Alexi Freeman

Alexi Freeman lives, works and dreams in Naarm (Melbourne), where he is undertaking a Research by Practice Masters interrogating the potential to biofabricate textiles utilising microorganisms. An interdisciplinary designer, Freeman intersperses periods of studio-based outcomes for industry, with expansive lab-based research sabbaticals.

Drawing inspiration from biology, geology and outer space, these great loves are alchemised in a diverse tapestry of visual, aural, wearable and installable experiences that seek to augment the boundaries of contemporary art, craft and artisanal design.

In his spare time Freeman fantasises about one day designing day wear that photosynthesises and evening wear that harvests renewable energy from infrared radiation.

Career experiences include: designing costumes for The Australian Ballet’s 50th anniversary season at the Sydney Opera House; exhibiting at the NGV and Powerhouse Museum; and launching WHITE NOISE on the rooftop of MONA, released with a site-specific scent They, jettisoned during the runway show via fragrance cannons.
