Research Abstract

Ho Chi Minh City — The Emerging Transnational Identity of a Megacity

I believe that the multilayered city cannot be captured with conventional methods of photography alone. My goal is to create photographic data sets and then to use these with the technology of Machine Learning to create hyperreal images of Ho Chi Minh City that reflect its identity. To avoid falling into the traps of Orientalism or overly nostalgic representations of the place I will need to continuously self-reflect on my own gaze.

Bio

I am an Associate Lecturer Photography at RMIT Vietnam. As an editorial and commercial Photographer my work has taken me around the world and has been published in outlets such as the New York Times or the Wallstreet Journal. In recent years I am moving from Commercial and Editorial Photography into the field of Art Photography. My current focus is the representation of cities through photographic methods.
