MICHAEL GRAEVE CURRENT RESEARCH

In my research I engage sound art and painting practices in dialogue, continually shifting frameworks for their creation and experiencing. My instrumentation consists of dozens of aged hifi turntable systems, performed or recorded as distributed patterns of hisses, hums, tones and rhythms. In performance and installation these sources are composed into spatialised multi-channel installations. When juxtaposed with site-specific easel and wall-painting works these installations are staged to create awkward oscillations of conjunctive and disjunctive relations that foreground audio-visual and spatio-temporal complexity. My studio practice contributes to the fields of visual music, concrete abstraction, sound art and turntablism.
