Art Centred practices situate photography within the practical, theoretical and conceptual discourse of contemporary art. Through an open approach to photographic image-making, students work on the development and realisation of ideas and projects to create work that is innovative and experimental.
An artistic approach to photographic practice involves the use of creative strategies to question existing ways of knowing, challenge the status quo, and offer new ways of seeing and understanding the world. The Art Centred area supports students in the development of a practice of discovery, invention, and refinement through their photographic projects.
Students work with a range of photographic processes and technologies to develop their careers as photographic artists, expanding their practices to intersect with installation, print, performance, sculpture, moving image and/or new media.
In addition to a strong relationship with practices, histories, and theories that prioritise the creative expression of the artist, Art Centred studios address social, cultural, and environmental issues and concerns. Grounded in ways of working that are ethical, critical, and articulate, students confront the edges of what they know conceptually and materially, and then go beyond.
