Friday 26 March – Tuesday 1 April 2021

The Capitol
113 Swanston Street, Melbourne

Copper Traces in Time: Hold is a response to the unprecedented times we currently live in, through storytelling and the creation of hand held copper discs. The surface of each disc is etched with images from RMIT student and staff experiences during COVID-19. These images were collaged together, etched into a copper plate and printed on paper using copper ink before the plate was cut into the discs.

Copper surfaces have been shown to have antimicrobial properties with COVID-19 no longer detected on it after only 4 hours.

While the virus is active the copper discs will be a reminder to act with care. Once the virus has abated the discs will be markers of this time which has drastically changed the way people live and will continue to affect our future.

Come and share a story of your COVID-19 experience and receive a copper disc.

Material Assembly (MatA) is a group of artist researchers within RMIT University whose studio-led enquiries explore the interrelationships between meaning and making with an emphasis on experimentation with material. As a group, MatA creates a critical, sensory and speculative space that fosters and facilitates research and collaboration within an expanded field of contemporary art and craft practices.
